31 August 2018– Midfielder Khanya Xesi, of the University of the Western Cape FC, has been called up to the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana squad that will take part in the 2018 COSAFA Women’s Championship.
The tournament will be played in Port Elizabeth from 12 – 22 September.
Xesi, who was part one of four players that was on the standby list, takes the place of the injured Hilda Magaia of TUT-PTA, while her space filled by Siyamthanda Skeyi of Thunderbirds in the Eastern Cape.
There are 12 teams in the competition and South Africa has been drawn in Group A alongside Botswana, Madagascar and Malawi.
Zambia, Cameroon, Lesotho and Mozambique are in Group B, while Group C has 2017 runners up Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Namibia and Uganda.
Banyana Banyana are the defending champions.
The 2018 COSAFA Women’s Championship will be the SIXTH EDITION of the tournament.
South Africa has won this tournament on four occassions – 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2017.
The squad assembles for camp on Monday, 3 September and departs for Port Elizabeth on the same day to start preparations for the tournament.
