27 August 2022 – Bafana Bafana have stepped up their preparations ahead of the second round, first leg African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against hosts Angola on Sunday.
The youthful South African selection arrived safely in Luanda, Angola, on Friday night and will take on the home national team in their first leg meeting at the Estadio de 11 Novembro. This match will kick-off at 17h00.
Coach Helman Mkhalele stated that he was happy with the players he roped in for this camp, adding that they will now be looking forward to Sunday’s challenge against the Palancas Negras.
South
Africa progressed into this final round of CHAN qualifiers after beating Comoros 1-0 over two legs on aggregate, while Angola won 3-0 against Mauritius.
The
winner of this round between the two nations will automatically progress to next year’s CHAN tournament to take place in Algeria.
“We will be playing against a stronger side in this final and crucial round of the CHAN qualifiers,” Mkhalele said.
“Most of Angola’s squad comprises of players who are plying their trade in the top three teams from the Angolan League. And coming into this round, we knew that we had to bring in the kind of talent that would match what we would be up against them.
“That
was achieved and we would like to thank all the PSL clubs who assisted us with the players for this round, given the fact that these qualifiers are taking place outside of the FIFA date.
“It
is now up to us to make sure that we go out there, do our best and make our country proud. We want to qualify for the CHAN tournament, which will take place in Algeria next year. We have come here with the intention of fighting for positive results, and that
we will fight for.
The return leg between South Africa and Angola will take place on 4 September at Orlando Stadium at 15h00.
